When the Unexpected Interrupts College: SIUE Introduces GradGuard for Students' Financial Peace of Mind

August 2, 2026, 2:45 PM

For students facing a serious illness, injury or mental health challenge, stepping away from college may sometimes be necessary. But the financial consequences of withdrawing can make an already difficult decision even more complicated.

SIUE is introducing a new resource to help students and families prepare for such unexpected circumstances. Through GradGuard, eligible SIUE students will have the option to purchase tuition insurance that may help protect their financial investment if they must completely withdraw from the University for a covered reason.

The initiative, spearheaded by the SIUE Bursar's Office in collaboration with Student Affairs, follows an evaluation process that began in 2025 to identify additional ways to support students facing unexpected life events that could disrupt their education.

"Education is a significant investment for students and their families," said Karen Straube, manager of University Cashiering Operations. "GradGuard offers an additional layer of financial protection that can provide peace of mind when unexpected circumstances arise."

For Dean of Students Mindy Dilley, EdD the value of the program is rooted in her experience helping students through some of life's most difficult moments. "As dean of students, I have worked with students facing serious medical and mental health challenges who desperately needed time away from the University to focus on their health and recovery through our medical leave of absence process," said Dilley.

Depending on when a student withdraws, University refund policies and changes to financial aid may leave students responsible for significant educational costs. GradGuard Tuition Insurance is designed to complement, not replace, SIUE's existing withdrawal and refund policies by helping reimburse eligible tuition, fees and certain room and board expenses for covered withdrawals.

"Unfortunately, some students find themselves in the difficult position of being unable to withdraw because of the financial implications, including the return of financial aid that can leave them owing a significant balance," Dilley said. "In those situations, students are often forced to choose between prioritizing their well-being and protecting their financial stability."

Straube noted that the program reflects SIUE's commitment to removing barriers that could prevent students from completing their education. "Our goal is to give students and families an added safety net so that an unexpected illness or other covered event doesn't have to jeopardize their long-term educational goals," she said.

"GradGuard offers an important resource that can help alleviate that burden, giving students and families greater flexibility and peace of mind when unexpected circumstances arise," Dilley added. "It allows students to step away when necessary, focus on the priorities that matter most, and return to their educational goals when they are ready."

GradGuard Tuition Insurance is optional and can be purchased when students pay their tuition bill or directly through GradGuard before the first day of classes. SIUE receives no compensation for student enrollment, and students are encouraged to carefully review policy terms, covered reasons, exclusions, eligibility requirements and enrollment deadlines to determine whether the coverage meets their individual needs.
