Students from Houston Christian University (HCU) took center stage on Opening Day as they helped unveil a vibrant new mural at Daikin Park, home of the Houston Astros.
The large-scale mural, created in partnership with Apache Corporation and renowned Houston artist Bobby Ramos, celebrates the culture, history and future of Houston. Featuring themes such as space exploration, baseball and the city's diverse identity, the mural, featuring images of the Astro's official mascot, Orbit, along with players, Correa, Altuve, Imai and Peña, reflects the spirit of Houston while aligning with the Astros' City Connect initiative.
"This mural is really special to us because Houston has such a rich culture of storytelling through public art," said Astros Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications Anita Sehgal. "Partnering with local artists and students allows us to celebrate that culture in a meaningful way."
The project brought together Houston muralists, Bobby and Brenda Ramos and HCU Master of Fine Arts students, Haylee Wuensche and Kasia Sustaita, along with returning contributors Hailey Harvey and Chloe Hudspeth. The team completed the mural under a tight deadline, finishing just hours before fans entered the stadium on Opening Day.
"This was an incredible experience," said Wuensche. "Working on such a large scale and learning a new medium challenged me as an artist but it was also incredibly rewarding."
For returning student Chloe Hudspeth, the opportunity to contribute again brought new challenges and growth. "Painting at this scale pushed me to develop new techniques and problem-solving skills," she said. "It was a great learning experience and an honor to be part of this project."
Assistant Visual Arts Professor Tiffany Bergeron praised her students for their dedication and professionalism as they contributed their artistic talents to the Houston Astros art mural, highlighting both their hard work and the meaningful impact of the project on the local community.
Apache Corporation, a longtime partner in the initiative, emphasized the importance of supporting local talent and community engagement. "Houston is a city full of culture and diversity," said Priscilla Stoller, Community Partnerships Advisor at Apache. "This mural is a beautiful representation of unity, creativity and community coming together."
The collaboration highlights HCU's commitment to providing students with real-world artistic opportunities while contributing to Houston's vibrant public art scene. By working alongside established professionals, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for careers in the arts.
Unveiled just ahead of Opening Day festivities, the mural now stands as a colorful and dynamic tribute to Houston - welcoming fans and celebrating the city's past, present and future.
