MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR), in coordination with Macomb Township, Shelby Township, Washington Township and Ray Township, has plans to reconstruct and modernize the intersection of 26 Mile Road and Hayes Road in 2026. MCDR held a community open house on April 29 at Macomb Township Hall to share proposed plans and project information with the public.
"Enhancing the intersection of 26 Mile Road and Hayes Road is an important investment in safer and more efficient travel for all motorists," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "The project is the result of safety coordination, community engagement and collaboration, and will ensure the intersection meets the needs of the community and the public well into the future."
The proposed project is anticipated to start in late summer or early fall of 2026 with traffic signal installation and restoration work estimated to be completed in the spring of 2027. The project includes:
"26 Mile Road and Hayes Road is an important intersection that provides essential access through four townships and connects to the rest of Macomb County," said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. "Reconstructing and modernizing the intersection will help enhance vehicular safety, reduce congestion, and improve traffic flow and pavement conditions."
The project was identified as a priority by MCDR, municipal leaders and community stakeholders and is anticipated to:
Federal funding allows MCDR to complete needed enhancements while reducing the cost for Macomb County and local municipalities. The total project is estimated to cost $1.25 million with $750,000 in federal funding being applied to the project. The remaining $500,000 cost of the project will be split between MCDR and the townships.
