Defendant Sentenced for Shooting, Killing Mother at Senior Living Facility

The Honorable Tami Bogert sentenced Ali Mustafa Hudson to 159 years to life in prison. On April 23, 2026, Ali Mustafa Hudson was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and felon in possession of a firearm. The jury also found true use of firearm allegations. An allegation that Hudson has a prior strike conviction for attempted robbery with a firearm was found true at the sentencing hearing.

On January 19, 2021, Sacramento County sheriff's deputies were called out to a senior living facility twice on reports of domestic violence and a restraining order involving 66-year-old Ramona Hayes and her son, Ali Mustafa Hudson. On the second call out, Hudson was angry and wanted the police to leave. He barricaded his mother in the apartment and ultimately shot her four times, killing her. He then opened fire on responding deputies and engaged in a shootout until he ran out of ammunition. Hudson was hit by police return fire, but he was wearing body armor and suffered only minor wounds. He had previously been convicted of a felony and was prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.
