Constitution Day 2026

The University of Dubuque will celebrate Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17, 2026 - the 239th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, one the most important documents in U.S. history. Often referred to as the cornerstone of American government, the U.S. Constitution was signed September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, and has been the basis of other democracies around the world.

The Constitution is known as a "living document" because it grows and changes as America and its people grow and change. While no document is perfect, only 27 amendments have been added since its writing over two centuries ago. Few documents have stood the test of time so well. At 4,400 words, the U.S. Constitution is the shortest written constitution of any major government in the world.

About Constitution Day

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787. Constitution Day became a national observance in 2004, when Congress approved legislation calling on citizens to commemorate the signing of the Constitution.

The law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of the an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004.
