Minnesota State Moorhead unveils new initiatives to drive innovation and student success

Minnesota State Moorhead is moving forward with new programs, partnerships and major investments - moves designed to prepare the region's most sought-after graduates and position Moorhead as a hub for innovation and workforce development.

These initiatives, designed to strengthen academic relevance and student success, were announced at the university's first-ever State of the University address on Sept. 16.

"I've never felt more energized in higher education than I do today," President Downs said. "Initiatives like the Honors College, the Institute for Applied AI, and the Preferred Partners Program are designed to prepare the region's most sought-after graduates. When we strengthen Minnesota State Moorhead, we strengthen the entire region. We're excited to build that future in partnership with our community."

Academic Initiatives

Dr. Ok-Hee Lee, Interim Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, said the university is seeking final approval to offer a new Master of Project Management and is in the early stages of developing an undergraduate degree in Cybercrime, a collaboration between computer science & information systems and sociology & criminal justice.

"I'm proud to build on the success of our bachelor's degree in project management program, which is nationally ranked by many sources, including ranking #1 nationally by Best Accredited Colleges," Lee said.

The Institute for Applied AI, which was announced last spring, has named Dr. Josh Riedy as its new executive director. Riedy is a local entrepreneur and innovator, having founded a technology startup that integrates artificial intelligence into everyday organizational processes. This entrepreneurial experience complements his deep roots in higher education, where he has served in multiple senior leadership roles across the region.

"AI is now part of everyday life, and it's critical that people understand how to use it responsibly, ethically, and securely," Riedy said. "For today's graduates, AI literacy is no longer optional; it's foundational. As both a business leader and educator, I know these skills will define who thrives in the workforce of tomorrow, and I'm passionate about ensuring Moorhead leads the way."

Student Experience Initiatives

Dr. Kara Gravley-Stack, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, shared a series of new programs and partnerships designed to create student experiences that energize learning, strengthen connections, and equip Dragons to lead with confidence. Among the opportunities are a state-of-the-art Makerspace and expanded Celebration of Nations to new internships for military-connected students and the revival of beloved traditions like the Underground. New collaborations with local partners, including Courts and Pints and Jade Presents, will further expand our commitment to hands-on learning and a vibrant campus life.

"Whether it's global celebrations or partnerships that open doors to internships and career opportunities, we're designing a student experience that connects classroom learning with the real world," Gravley-Stack said. "These opportunities make our students and communities stronger."

Facilities Investments

The audience also heard from campus leaders about facilities updates and a commitment to invest $125 million into transforming the Moorhead campus. Among the projects are the $23 million renovation of Weld Hall, which will open for classes next fall; a vision for a bigger, better and brighter Nemzek building and a state-of-the-art indoor facility for athletics and recreation to include a turf, a track, and training spaces; and a revitalized Center for Business that reflects the same quality and prestige as the Paseka School of Business' AACSB accreditation. The goal is to update the building to be even more technology-rich, flexible, and interactive for academic and business community offerings.

Regional Engagement

Dr. Jason Trainer, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Strategic Initiatives, shared the success of the Moorhead Scholars partnership with Moorhead Public Schools, which began this fall.

"Last year, 43 Spuds became Dragons. This fall, that number grew to 135 Spuds-a 200% increase. That's 135 of our community's top students choosing to continue their journey right here as Dragons, preparing to become the teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs, and leaders our region needs," Trainer said.

He also announced the launch of the new Preferred Partners Program designed to create meaningful collaborations with businesses, government agencies, healthcare systems, and school districts across the region. Partners and their employees will receive a 15% tuition discount, waived application fees and enrollment deposits, and tailoredopportunities such as customizable degree and certificate programs, joint research, community projects, and workforce initiatives.

"Through these exclusive benefits, we will help expand educational attainment and professional advancement for our partners and their employees," Trainer said.

Representing one of the Preferred Partners was Abby Hanson, vice president of Microsoft and AI at ABM Technology Group. The university and ABM Technology Group are partnering to host a three-day AI Innovation Summit on the Moorhead campus, Oct. 27-29. Events are geared toward business leaders, educators, and high school students. Learn more at https://www.msumfoundation.org/e/ai-innovation-summit/

"By bringing together business leaders, educators, and students, Moorhead is leading conversations that will shape how our communities embrace AI," Trainer said. "Minnesota State Moorhead is proud to be a hub where innovation and collaboration intersect."
