Des Moines, Iowa- Monday, January 26, 2026 - This morning was the first day of school for 14 future firefighters.
Before the sun was up this morning, the 104th class of Des Moines Fire Department recruits began their first day of training at the Des Moines Fire Academy.
"The first day of an academy represents a major accomplishment and step for the future the Des Moines Fire Department," Des Moines Fire Chief Jonathan Lund said. "These men and women have chosen a career of service and sacrifice to help provide essential services to our residents in their times of greatest need. Today is the beginning of that commitment to Des Moines."The 14 recruits will spend the next year training with the Des Moines Fire Academy and obtaining firefighting and emergency medical certifications before joining Des Moines' 11 fire stations in early 2027.
