Immediately after the robbery, Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit (MCU), assisted by unit analysts, Criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division, North Precinct Officers, and others, began gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and pursuing leads. That investigation revealed that multiple suspects committed the robbery, were armed with guns, and threatened the clerk behind the counter. Another store employee came in during the robbery, a struggle ensued, and multiple shots were fired. One of the adult male employees was shot at least five times, four times in the abdomen and once in the leg. Bullets also struck the walls of the store and broke a window. Portland Police Officers began arriving at the call less than 4 minutes after being dispatched, located the victim, verified the crime scene was safe, notified the Bureau of Emergency Communications dispatchers, who quickly summoned Portland Fire & Rescue and American Medical Response. The seamless, multiagency response was key in getting the victim to a Level-1 trauma center quickly, where he underwent extensive surgery to stabilize his condition. Thanks to those combined efforts, the victim is expected to survive his injuries.

Evidence found and investigative efforts led MCU Detectives to quickly connect this robbery case to other crimes and potential crimes that happened earlier this week.

Carjacking

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at 12:36 a.m., Portland Police Officers from North Precinct responded to a report of a robbery at gunpoint of a car, which was determined to have taken place at Northeast 73rd Avenue and Northeast Halsey Street. The driver, who was working for a rideshare service at the time, was approached by multiple armed suspects, who robbed him and left with his car. The victim ran away on foot and suffered minor injuries when he fell trying to get away from the suspects (26-203719).

Menacing

That same day, Tuesday, July 14, at 3:31 p.m., Portland Police Officers from North Precinct responded to a report of a menacing with a handgun in the 6100 block of Northeast 31st Avenue. The victim reported that he interrupted a group of suspects trying to break into his vehicle in his driveway. The group ran and jumped into another vehicle, and multiple suspects in the vehicle pointed handguns at the victim as they drove away. No one was injured (26-204276).

Robbery

Later on Tuesday July 14, at 10:58 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to North Precinct responded to a report of a robbery at a gas station convenience store in the 3400 block of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Officers' investigation revealed that multiple suspects robbed the store at gunpoint, pointed guns at the store employee, and one suspect struck the victim in the head with a pistol. The employee was evaluated by paramedics at the scene for injuries, but declined ambulance transport (26-204701).

Suspicious Circumstances

On Friday, July 17, 2026 at 4:24 a.m., North Precinct Officers responded to a suspicious circumstances call at a convenience store in the 5800 block of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard where a group of suspects wearing masks approached the front door and tried to get in. However, the door was locked and they left. Officers, anticipating the possibility that the crew would try another robbery soon, began actively looking for the suspects (26-207084).

Robbery/Shooting

At 4:46 a.m., officers were dispatched by BOEC to the robbery at the gas station in the 400 block of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The first two officers arrived less than four minutes later. The suspects were seen leaving the scene in multiple vehicles just minutes before (26-207093).

Over the course of the day Friday, Detectives developed information about suspect descriptions and suspect vehicles. They shared information with PPB patrol officers as well as officers assigned to the Focused Intervention Team (FIT) and the Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST), who were working a special late-hour detail trying to deter gun violence unrelated to the robbery cases.

Just about an hour after that information was shared, ECST and FIT officers located suspect vehicles in the area of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Alberta Street. Detectives responded and began investigative work and verified the possible suspects' location in a residence in the 500 block of Northeast Webster Street. They applied for and were granted a search warrant. Due to the significant danger involved in serving the warrant, Detective Division Command requested a callout of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). Because significant personnel were already assigned to work a concert at Providence Park, only part of the request could be fulfilled, and PPB requested assistance from East Metro SWAT, which sent some sworn members to help.

The combined teams served the search warrant at the residence, detaining 12 people. Detectives located multiple handguns, which were seized as evidence.

The currently available evidence tied three suspects to the robbery and shooting at the gas station in the 400 block of Northeast Broadway. Four were tied to the robbery of the gas station on July 14. One was connected to the menacing. The juvenile suspects were charged and booked into the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center. An adult was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on an outstanding warrant.
