Young people from across Addu City successfully completed the Eku Ekee Youth Peer Education Training, held from 5-11 June 2026, equipping a new cohort of peer educators with the knowledge and skills to promote gender equality and help prevent gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic violence (DV) in their communities.
The training was delivered under the Advancing Inclusion in the Maldives (AIM) Project, implemented by UNDP Maldives with support from the European Union, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare.
Over six days, participants engaged in interactive learning sessions covering values and leadership, effective communication, decision-making, gender norms and power dynamics, gender-based violence prevention, digital citizenship, mental health and wellbeing, and peer education methodologies. Through discussions, group activities and practical exercises, participants strengthened their confidence to facilitate conversations, challenge harmful social norms and encourage positive behaviour change among their peers.
The programme places young people at the centre of efforts to prevent violence by equipping them to become advocates for respectful relationships, inclusion and community wellbeing. As peer educators, participants will use the knowledge and skills gained during the training to raise awareness, foster dialogue and support violence prevention initiatives within their schools and communities.
The Addu City training builds on the continued expansion of the Eku Ekee programme across the Maldives, contributing to national efforts to empower young people as agents of change and create safer, more inclusive communities. Through the AIM Project, UNDP Maldives and the European Union continue to support initiatives that strengthen youth leadership, promote gender equality and advance the prevention of gender-based violence.
