Suspect Faces Felony Assault and Robbery Charges After Stabbing in Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood

Portland Police patrol officers tracked down a stabbing suspect over 90 minutes after a serious injury attack in a Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood grocery store, and the suspect is now facing serious felony charges.

On Thursday, January 1, 2026 at 10:05 a.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to East Precinct responded to a report of a stabbing at a grocery store in the 3500 block of Southeast 122nd Avenue. When they arrived, they found a victim, a 77-year-old male, with serious knife injuries. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Following medical treatment, his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. Officers learned that the victim had been robbed and stabbed while in a restroom in the grocery store.

The suspect left the area, and Officers gathered information about the description and direction of travel. Witness information and assistance from TriMet security helped officers track the suspect down to the area of Southeast 119th Avenue and Southeast Division Street. At 11:40 a.m., over an hour-and-a-half following the original call, officers arrested Christopher E. Woods, 51, of Portland.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit responded to assume the investigation and subsequently booked Woods into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Assault in the First Degree and Robbery in the First Degree. Detectives do not believe that the suspect and victim know each other.
