ERIA Hosts CMK School of ASEAN Studies Delegation for Dialogue on Energy Transition and Sustainability

Jakarta, 18 August 2026: ERIA welcomed a delegation from the CMK School of ASEAN Studies to its Jakarta office on 18 August 2026 for a dialogue on the region's energy transition and sustainability. Organised in collaboration with the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation and the Korea University ASEAN Center (KUAC), the visit marked the delegation's second engagement with ERIA.

Two ERIA experts from the Asia Zero Emission Center shared insights into key aspects of Southeast Asia's energy transition. Dr Phetkeo Poumanyvong, Senior Energy Economist, discussed biofuel development, while Mr Muhammad Indra Wahyudin, Assistant Programme Manager on Energy, highlighted the significance of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).

The speakers highlighted the potential of biofuels and regional power connectivity to strengthen energy co-operation and security while supporting decarbonisation efforts across Southeast Asia. Mr Wahyudin explained the APG's role in facilitating the region's energy transition and deepening regional integration, noting that ASEAN must balance economic development and environmental sustainability with stronger regional co-operation.

The discussion also explored challenges associated with palm oil expansion and deforestation, as well as the importance of sustainability certification. Participants considered opportunities for the Republic of Korea to support Southeast Asia's transition through innovative technologies, investment, and co-operation in advanced biofuels.

The event was opened by Prof. Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean and Managing Director of the ERIA School of Government, and concluded by Dr Choi Kyung-hee, Deputy Director of KUAC.

The engagement reflects ERIA's commitment to advancing regional policy dialogue on sustainable energy, strengthening co-operation between ASEAN and the Republic of Korea, and nurturing the next generation of scholars and professionals in ASEAN and East Asia.
