GDOT to begin work at SR 300 and SR 32 intersection

WORTH COUNTY - Georgia Department of Transportation crews are scheduled to begin installation next month of a temporary Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) at the State Route 300 and SR 32 intersection in Worth County.

The Department still plans to explore a more permanent solution to improve the intersection in the future. In the interim, the RCUT will provide a more immediate way to control traffic and reduce crashes, especially angle crashes.

An RCUT is designed to restrict the movements of traffic coming off the minor road in order to reduce conflict points with vehicles on the major highway. SR 32 traffic will no longer be able to cross SR 300 or turn left. Drivers will instead turn right, travel to the nearest existing north or south median opening and complete a U-turn. SR 300 traffic movement will not be affected.

Weather permitting, GDOT crews plan to begin work Nov. 2. They will add asphalt to the loon at the two turn around median openings. A loon is pavement that is constructed outside of the normal traffic lane. It allows larger vehicles to safely make a U-turn on a divided roadway. The SR 300 northbound right turn lane at SR 32 will also be offset about six feet to the right. The SR 300 southbound right turn lane at SR 32 is already offset.

Expect lane closures for the asphalt work. There may be additional lane closures on SR 300 when work begins to install the RCUT components, but that's not expected for several weeks. The RCUT is expected to be complete in December.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia's economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment.
