Student Spotlight - Juana Bustamante

Imagine a young girl, just first grade, starting school. That alone would be a scary experience. For Juana Bustamante, it wasn't't just the first day of first grade in a new school. It was the first day of school in a new country.

"I did not speak English, and I remember feeling terrified in a new classroom. That experience stayed with me." It influenced her desire to become a teacher. "I wanted to become the kind of educator who makes sure every child feels safe, welcomed, heard, and seen."

That experience continued to shape her when she began working as a classroom aide. "I have tried to build a classroom that feels like a family, where students know they belong and never feel less capable because they are still learning."

Today, Juana is pursuing her teaching certification through A&M Texarkana's Master of Education in Teaching program, continuing to build the skills to create the kind of classroom she once needed. "My experience at A&M Texarkana has shown me how much it means when educators care for their students as people."

She has seen that kind of care modeled by professors like Dr. Melba Foster and Dr. Debora Shidemantle. "Dr. Foster stands out to me, because she goes above and beyond. She is there for her students and offers encouragement and guidance that reaches beyond coursework," Juana shared. "I have also appreciated how responsive and engaged Dr. Shidemantle has been, even on weekends, and how often she reminds us that we can reach out when we need help. Their example encourages me to keep growing as a teacher who is present for her students."

For Juana, teaching remains deeply personal. "Children need more than lessons. They need someone who listens, believes in them, and helps them feel confident enough to try."

As both an educator and a mother, she understands the trust families place in teachers and the difference it can make when a child knows they belong. "I have always wanted my students to feel cared for and to know that their voices matter."
