Find a Truly Immersive Experience at the 3rd FDLC/ATLAS Course in Clinical Fungi

ARUP Laboratories and the University of Utah Department of Pathology are hosting the 3rd FDLC/ATLAS Course in Clinical Fungi organized by the Fungal Diagnostic Laboratory Consortium (FDLC), Foundation Atlas of Clinical Fungi, and Radboud University Medical Center.

This course brings together international experts across multiple disciplines to deliver focused instruction in fungal detection and identification. Participants will practice identifying organisms using colony morphology and microscopic features, while also learning current state-of-the art approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fungal diseases.

Over six days, presenters will cover the following topics:

  • An overview of the fungal kingdom
  • Mucorales and Entomophthorales and Eurotiales (hyaline hyphomycetes I)
  • Onygenales (dermatophytes and dimorphic fungi)
  • Yeasts and yeast-like fungi
  • Black yeasts and other dematiaceous opportunists
  • Hyaline opportunists (hyaline hyphomycetes II) and Basidiomycetes

ARUP's own Kimberly Hanson, MD, MHS, medical director of Mycology, is co-course director. Dr. Hanson is a professor of Internal Medicine and adjunct professor of Pathology at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. She is also the head of Immunocompromised Host Infectious Diseases Services for University of Utah Health.

Hanson shared, "It is an honor for ARUP Laboratories to be selected as the host for the 3rd FDLC/ATLAS Course in Clinical Fungi. Having previously participated as faculty, I feel especially fortunate to now serve as a co-course director. What continues to impress me most about this course is its truly immersive experience, dedicated to advancing the state of the art in medical mycology. The program is thoughtfully designed for both laboratorians and clinicians, offering a rare opportunity to sharpen practical identification skills while learning from and networking with global leaders in fungal diagnosis and management."

Other co-course directors include:

  • Sean X. Zhang, MD, PhD, director of the Medical Mycology Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital and an associate professor of Pathology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He specializes in medical microbiology, with a focus on medical mycology and fungal diagnostics; and
  • Sybren de Hoog, PhD, a researcher in phylogenetic and ecological mycology at the Center of Expertise in Mycology at Radboud University Medical Center and Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He is one of the coauthors of the "Atlas of Clinical Fungi." Dr. de Hoog's area of interest is the taxonomy, ecology, and evolution of fungi, with emphasis on possible lines of adaptation to the human host.

Additional presenters include faculty from the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories:

  • Ben Bradley MD, PhD: Fungal histopathology
  • Blaine Mathison BS, M(ASCP): Microsporidia
  • Patricia Slev, PhD: Fungal serology testing

Registration is open to laboratory professionals, physicians, trainees, scientists, and researchers at all learning levels who are interested in the diagnosis of fungal diseases.
