Discovery Day will begin with a pasta lunch, science-related games and gift-card giveaways in Sabin Auditorium.
Then, youths 12 to 18 years old will tour a science lab, learning how zebrafish help researchers study the signaling mechanisms that determine heart size in humans.
One of the interactive workshops for participants will be conducted by members of the Cincinnati Children's Respiratory Therapy team, who will demonstrate pulmonary function tests and discuss how they help save the lives of kids who need care.
Participants will also tour the Discover Together Biobank in the brand-new Winslow Research Pavilion, where students will see how DNA can be extracted and learn how some research samples are stored at a chilly 112 degrees below zero Fahrenheit!
"Discovery Day is designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology and medicine, and we want to let them know about the opportunities available in healthcare research and hospital settings," said Monica Mitchell, PhD, a pediatric psychologist who is Cincinnati Children's assistant vice president for Community Relations.
