New I-40 interchange opens to traffic in east Kingman

Flying Fortress Parkway interchange ushered in with flyover of WW II-era bomber

KINGMAN - Hundreds of community members gathered midday Monday to celebrate a new interchange along Interstate 40 in this northwestern Arizona community not by watching the first cars roll across the roadway, but by looking to the sky for a ceremonial flyover of a World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress bomber.

The aircraft was a fitting symbol to mark the debut of an interchange that bears the name Flying Fortress Parkway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation opened the $44 million project in Mohave County following an event hosted by the City of Kingman.

The interchange serves the eastern portion of the city, enhancing economic activity by providing more direct I-40 access to the community's airport, industrial development and employment centers. ADOT began the project in December 2024 in partnership with the City of Kingman.

The new interchange is expected to accommodate growth and relieve congestion around the I-40 interchange at Andy Devine Avenue, also known as Historic Route 66. That interchange is 4 miles west of Flying Fortress Parkway.

This interchange is part of a larger ADOT investment in the Kingman area to construct a new free-flowing interchange between I-40 and US 93. That $106 million project is more than 80% complete and is expected to be finished in 2027.
