Monmouth County seeks 2027 applicants for history and preservation grants

FREEHOLD, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners and the Monmouth County Historical Commission have released the 2027 grant applications for the History Regrant Program and the Historic Preservation Grant Program.

"As Monmouth County continues to celebrate America's 250th anniversary and highlight our County's rich history, the Board of County Commissioners is proud to continue supporting the History Regrant Program and Historic Preservation Grant Program," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "With so much attention focused on our nation's history and the excitement surrounding the semiquincentennial, I encourage anyone interested in applying for a grant to visit the County's website to learn more about the application process."

Two types of grants are available through the 2027 History Regrant Program : General Operating Support (GOS) for historical organizations' overall expenses, or Special Project (SP) funding for local history projects and programs that are open and accessible to the public.

The Historic Preservation Grant provides matching funds with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $12,000 to restore historic buildings owned by organizations or municipalities. The applications for both grants are available online at visitmonmouth.com.

"We thank our residents, municipalities, historical groups and our nonprofits for their ongoing commitment to restoring and preserving historic structures throughout Monmouth County," said Commissioner Erik Anderson, liaison to the Monmouth County Historical Commission. "By supporting preservation projects through the History Regrant and Historic Preservation Grant programs, Monmouth County continues to honor the stories and places that shape our community."

First-time applicants are required to attend a workshop that is available in-person and online. The Regrant workshop will be on Sept. 16 and the Preservation workshop will be on Sept. 28. Details can be found on the Monmouth County Historical Commission website.

The 2027 History Regrant Program is made possible with funds provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the New Jersey Department of State. The goal of the program is to strengthen local history organizations, inspire projects to preserve and contribute to the local historic record and increase public awareness and participation in local history programming.

The deadline to declare intent to apply for the Monmouth County History Regrant Program is Oct. 2 and the completed application is due Oct. 30.

The deadline to declare intent to apply for the Monmouth County Historic Preservation Grant Program is Oct. 7 and the completed application is due Nov. 12. Two changes apply to the 2027 Historic Preservation Grant: a new declaration of intent to apply and an increase in the maximum grant award from $10,000 to $12,000.

The Monmouth County Historical Commission was established by what was previously known as the Board of Chosen Freeholders in August 1988 for the preservation and conservation of Monmouth County history. The Commission's principal programs provide grants, maintain historic buildings and support history programming in order to preserve Monmouth County's rich and diverse historic legacy.
