WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) yesterday attended a solemn transfer of remains at Dover Air Force Base for two Iowa National Guard members killed in Syria: Sgt. William Nathaniel "Nate" Howard of Marshalltown and Sgt. Edgar Torres-Tovar of Des Moines. President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chief of Staff of the Army General Randy George also attended, along with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and members of the Iowa congressional delegation.
Grassley and Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) also introduced a Senate resolution honoring the lives and service of Howard and Torres-Tovar. Rep. Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) is leading a companion resolution in the House of Representatives.
"Sergeant Howard and Sergeant Torres-Tovar paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we owe them a debt that can never be repaid," Grassley said. "Yesterday's transfer of remains allowed us to continue paying our respects to these young men. Barbara and I are praying for their families and loved ones. I'm also joining Senator Ernst to introduce a resolution in their honor. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and will be written in the Senate's history books forever."
