Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, Begins Official Visit to Mexico

Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente received Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, today at Felipe Ángeles International Airport, as she begins an official visit to Mexico including a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum at the National Palace tomorrow.

Her visit aims to strengthen ties between Mexico and Canada, following up on the official visit made by Prime Minister Mark Carney last September, as well as to discuss priority policies in support of indigenous peoples in both nations.

Mary Simon has served as head of state since 2021, when she became Canada's first indigenous Governor General in history. She maintains an active agenda focused on social reconciliation (especially with indigenous peoples), mental health, wellbeing, diversity, inclusion, nature and the environment.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy and is part of the Commonwealth of Nations. King Charles III is the monarch, and Governor General Mary Simon serves as his representative both in Canada and abroad.

The Governor General is responsible for swearing in the Prime Minister and cabinet, for opening and dissolving Parliament, and for serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces.

At the reception at Felipe Ángeles International Airport, the Governor General was accompanied by her husband Whit Fraser. Also in attendance were the Undersecretary for North America, Roberto Velasco, and the Canadian Ambassador to Mexico, Cameron MacKay.
