Drone geofencing systems and security regulation

Drone geofencing systems and security regulation

31.10.2025

Question for written answer E-004288/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Fabio De Masi (NI)

Recent drone sightings have triggered concerns by security authorities all over Europe. Nonetheless, the public debate has largely neglected developments in the drone industry that carry considerable influence on this matter. Most recently, the world's largest civilian drone manufacturer, DJI, has started selling new drone models without the previously integrated automatic geofencing system that prevented flights over sensitive areas such as airports or government buildings[1].

  • 1.How does the Commission assess the potential safety risks this change poses to airspace security and the protection of critical infrastructure within the EU?
  • 2.Does the Commission deem further regulation of this sector necessary, considering the real risk stemming from the misuse of private drones in the proximity of critical infrastructure? If so, what steps have already been undertaken?
