COULEE DAM, Wash. - The Hawk Creek Campground and boat launch area will close to all public access starting April 16 through Oct. 6.
The closure is necessary to keep visitors, staff, and construction crews safe during the Hawk Creek Road Improvements and Stabilization Project. It may be extended through Oct. 30, if needed.
The project, managed by the Federal Highway Administration in partnership with Lincoln County and the National Park Service, will begin at the intersection of Hawk Creek Road and Miles Creston Road. Work will focus on improving the access road, including the single-lane section where the creek has eroded the roadway.
Project work includes:
Widening and paving Hawk Creek Road
Realigning sections of the road and strengthening the creek bank to prevent future erosion
Building retaining walls along the hillside above the new road
Restoring disturbed areas with soil and native vegetation
Installing guardrails and updated signage
Because of heavy equipment and construction activity, there will be no public access by road or water during the project. All public facilities, including restrooms and docks, will be closed.
The Hawk Creek waterway will be closed at the west side of the narrows. A log boom and signage will be installed to prevent passage.
Visitors traveling on Miles Creston Road should expect increased traffic and heavy equipment entering and exiting Hawk Creek Road.
The Hawk Creek area remains open for day use only through April 15. Visitors are asked to use caution around preparatory work.
