ICYMI: DNC Blasts Trump’s First Year in Office as a Disaster as Working Families Suffer Under Rising Costs, Less Health Care Arrow

Donald Trump promised an economic "golden age" on "Day One," but his first year back in office has been a complete disaster for working families. Instead, Trump has squeezed American families' pocketbooks with skyrocketing prices and rising inflation, destroyed thousands of jobs, and implemented policies that will kick millions of Americans off their health care. Yesterday, across the country, the DNC highlighted how disastrous Trump's first year in office has been for working families.

New polling on Donald Trump's first year shows that twice as many Americans say Trump is focused on the wrong priorities as the right ones, and a staggering 6 in 10 U.S. adults think Trump has done more to hurt than help the cost of living in his second term.

The bottom line: Under Trump's watch, Americans are far worse off now than they were a year ago. That's why Americans are putting their faith in strong Democratic leaders who are fighting to lower costs and protect Americans' health care.

Take a look at some of the coverage below:

Politico: DNC spotlights SNAP for 2026
[Rachel Shin, 1/20/26]

"A new Democratic National Committee report released today, shared first with POLITICO, estimated that over 22 million households will lose SNAP benefits under the GOP's One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

"'On the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump taking office for his second term, families everywhere have been devastated by Trump's tariffs and Big Ugly Bill,' DNC spokesperson Abhi Rahman said in a statement. 'Trump has sacrificed families who need critical food assistance to put dinner on the table to line the pockets of his billionaire backers.'

"States projected to have the most families lose SNAP benefits include California, New York and Florida, according to research compiled by the DNC. The report warned of spillover economic damages for farmers and grocers, such as reduced food purchases and reduction in local employment, leaning into the party's angling for increased support in rural America."

AZ Mirror: Arizona affordability crisis worsens under Trump, DNC analysis claims
[Jim Small, 1/20/26]

"President Donald Trump campaigned on lowering prices and boosting prosperity for everyday Americans, but a year into his second term, Arizonans are paying more at stores, facing skyrocketing health care costs and confronting the loss of aid to help them fill their grocery carts.

"That's according to an analysis released today by the Democratic National Committee, which blasted the president for focusing on building a gilded ballroom, calling affordability a 'hoax' created by his opponents and making vulgar gestures to working-class Americans who criticize him. …

"'The numbers don't lie: Trump's first year back in office has been a complete disaster for Arizona families. Trump broke his promise to lower costs on Day One and instead has made life far more expensive for Arizona families,' said DNC Senior Advisor for Messaging, Mobilization, and Strategy Tim Hogan. 'While Donald Trump may think affordability is a hoax, Arizona families know better, which is why they are putting their trust in Democrats who will keep fighting to lower costs and protect health care.'"

Florida Politics: DNC declares Donald Trump's first year in office a 'complete disaster'
[Janelle Irwin Taylor, 1/20/26]

"One year in, Trump continues to claim the nation is enjoying an 'economic boom.' But the Democratic National Committee (DNC) wholly disagrees, especially for Floridians.

"'The numbers don't lie: Trump's first year back in office has been a complete disaster for Florida families. Trump broke his promise to lower costs on Day One and instead has made life far more expensive for Florida families,' said Tim Hogan, the DNC's senior advisor for messaging, mobilization and strategy.

"'Because of Trump's Big Ugly Bill and failed economic policies, unemployment in Florida is up, families are paying $1,060 more a year, and 1,500,000 Floridians will be kicked off their health care after Trump let premiums skyrocket. While Donald Trump may think affordability is a hoax, Florida families know better, which is why they are putting their trust in Democrats who will keep fighting to lower costs and protect health care.'"

Channel 3000: One year into Trump's second term, affordability remains top of mind
[Kyle Jones, 1/20/26]

"Data from the Joint Economic Committee found that American families paid $310 more for groceries in 2025 than in 2024. For example, a family buying one 2lb package of chicken breasts per week spent about $11.55 more on that chicken over the course of 2025 than the year before.

"'We're seeing a lot of damage done to working families, particularly in Wisconsin,' DNC Senior Advisor Tim Hogan said. 'For a working family, combine his tariffs and his trade war with the 'Big, Ugly Bill,' and a family is losing about $1,000 a year.' …

"Trump's first year back in office also saw sweeping changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Data from the Urban Institute found that 375,000 Wisconsin families would lose their SNAP benefits due to changes made by the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

"'People are being pushed off the rolls. They don't have the resources that they need to be able to put food on the table for their family,' Hogan said. 'And the big question that everyone is asking is, why? For what? What are we doing this for?' …

"'There is a laser focus for the Democratic Party, no matter where you are in the tent, that the most important thing right now is a focus on affordability and understanding that people are hurt in their pocketbooks,' Hogan said."

Michigan Public Radio: Trump's first year back in office brings big changes for Michigan
[Colin Jackson, 1/20/26]

"Democrats say the tariffs and other federal policies, like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, are costing Michiganders more. They see affordability as a winning issue in November's general elections and argue the stats are on their side. …

"'The reality that people are facing in their everyday lives is that things are getting more expensive. And it's as simple as that, and they don't see help coming,' Hogan said."

Pennsylvania Independent: After a year of Trump, costs are rising for Pennsylvanians
[Anna Gustafson, 1/20/26]

"One year after President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, 2025, Pennsylvanians are seeing their living expenses rise, and they're not happy about it.

"Health care premiums are increasing, hundreds of thousands of people across the commonwealth are expected to lose health coverage, families are spending more money due to inflation and tariffs, and unemployment is up. …

"'The numbers don't lie: Trump's first year back in office has been a complete disaster for Pennsylvania families,' Tim Hogan, the DNC senior advisor for messaging, mobilization and strategy, said in a statement sent to the Pennsylvania Independent.

"'Trump broke his promise to lower costs on Day One and instead has made life far more expensive for Pennsylvania families.'"

WFAA: One year in: How Trump's second term is playing out in Texas
[Jason Whitely, 1/20/26]

"With affordability emerging as a key issue in 2026, Democrats and Republicans are both looking back over President Trump's first full year of his second term.

"'The numbers don't lie,' said Tim Hogan, DNC Senior Advisor for Messaging, Mobilization, and Strategy, 'Trump's first year back in office has been a complete disaster for Texas families.' …

"'Trump broke his promise to lower costs on Day One and instead has made life far more expensive for Texas families' the DNC's Hogan added. 'While Donald Trump may think affordability is a hoax, Texas families know better, which is why they are putting their trust in Democrats who will keep fighting to lower costs and protect health care.'"

Queen City News: GOP and Democrats clash over President Trump's first year in second term
[Andy Weber, 1/20/26]

"'I think the first year of Trump's second term can be described in one slogan, which is Trump and billionaires first and Americans last,' said DNC Deputy Communications Director Hannah Muldavin.

"During an interview with Chief Political Correspondent Andy Weber, Muldavin made the argument that the Trump administration has failed to deliver on campaign promises related to affordability, citing tariffs and rising healthcare insurance premiums.

"'He said on day one that he would come in and lower costs for working families. And if you compare how his family has benefited compared to North Carolina working families, the difference couldn't be more stark,' she added."
