WASHINGTON-House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) today announced that she has formally requested the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the U.S. House of Representatives to withhold her pay for the duration of the government shutdown.
"It's shameful that our troops who are willing to lay their lives on the line for this country are left in limbo while Washington Democrats play political games," Chairwoman McClain said. "If the people who defend this country have to go without a paycheck, Members of Congress shouldn't collect one either. We work for the American people - not the other way around."
On Sept. 19, House Republicans passed a clean bill to fund the government through Nov. 21 that would ensure service members are paid. Every single House Democrat except one voted against the bill resulting in a government shutdown. On seven separate occasions, Senate Democrats have voted to keep the government shutdown putting service members pay in jeopardy.
