SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced on Monday, January 19 that Annie Lewin, Shepherd University's Title IX director, has been named to the inaugural class of L.P. Hill Unity in Sports Award honorees for the 2025-26 season. The award recognizes individuals or groups on each PSAC member campus who, through intercollegiate athletics, exemplify the principles of unity, equity, and access for all.
Among the initiatives spearheaded by Lewin is Restorative Justice Week, which fosters meaningful dialogue across the campus community and provides training and education aimed at cultivating a culture of mutual respect.
The award is named in honor of Leslie Pinckney Hill, the first president of Cheyney State Teachers College. From 1913 to 1950, Hill served as principal of the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia and led its establishment as Cheyney State Teachers College. A Phi Beta Kappa scholar and Harvard graduate, Hill was the son of a formerly enslaved person and later taught at Tuskegee Institute. He was also a distinguished educator, writer, poet, and community leader.
In 1927, one year after the initial documents establishing the Pennsylvania State Normal School Athletic Association, Hill advocated for the inclusion of Cheyney in the association's bylaws after it had been excluded from the original draft. The Board of Principals promptly corrected the omission, ensuring that all 14 state-owned institutions were represented in the association's initial governing documents.
