Mayor Scanlon Announces Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon, joined by Buffalo Police Department (BPD) Commissioner Alfonso Wright and BPD Wellness Coordinator Officer Matthew Cross, along with Megan Andrews from Child and Family Services, held a press conference to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Buffalo. They also shared critical resources available to the community.

"Suicide is preventable, and together we can break the stigma, promote awareness, and save lives," said Mayor Scanlon. "By recognizing Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, we are sending a powerful signal to residents that their mental health matters, and that the City of Buffalo stands with them."

"At Child and Family Services, we see every day how support, understanding and access to mental health care can save lives. Suicide is preventable, and this month is a reminder that no one should have to struggle alone. Together, as a community, we can reduce stigma and create pathways to hope and healing," said Megan Andrews, Employee Assistance Program Director.

The event included a moment of silence to honor the lives lost to suicide, including members of the Buffalo Police Department, and highlight the City's ongoing commitment to support the mental health and wellness of all residents.

Over the past decade, the City of Buffalo has expanded efforts to address mental health needs, including the creation of the Buffalo Police Department Wellness Coordinator position in 2023. With support from a Blue Fund grant, this office continues to equip officers with resources to cope with the trauma and stress of their work.

Additionally, as part of this year's observance, Mayor Scanlon has directed that the top of Buffalo City Hall be illuminated in purple and teal on September 24 and 25 in solidarity with suicide survivors, families, and loved ones impacted by loss. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 now for 24/7 confidential support.
