New electric standards to be effective Aug. 1

Published on July 29, 2026

During the May 27, 2026, Rulemaking Hearing, the Colorado Electrical Board approved the adoption of the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC)/NFPA 70. Next steps in this process are finalization by the state legislature, with an anticipated adoption date of August 1, 2026.

As a result, effective August 1, 2026, all new project submittals to Denver Community Planning and Development (CPD) must comply with the 2026 NEC. Projects submitted for plan review prior to August 1, 2026 are permitted to remain under the 2023 NEC as the basis of design. Email the CPD Electrical Review team with questions.
