Professor Timothy Haab will serve as The Ohio State University's next Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference, the university announced Friday.
Ross Bjork, Ohio State senior vice president and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith endowed athletics director, said Haab's background in business is a benefit in the current climate of college athletics.
"We are excited to welcome Tim Haab as our Faculty Athletics Representative in-waiting," Bjork said. "Tim brings a unique perspective to this role as an economist and scholar around business perspectives. Given the rapid changes in college athletics, his expertise and viewpoints will be valuable moving forward. His previous experiences in faculty governance will continue to help us have a positive relationship across our broad campus.
"Our current FAR, Dr. John Davidson, has been such a valuable teammate for me since I arrived and I know Tim will continue the positive momentum and help represent the faculty, all students and support our student-athletes and coaches in all that we do around the circle of care," Bjork said.
Haab, who earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Maryland-Baltimore County in 1991 and a PhD in agriculture & resource economics from Maryland in 1995, will serve as FAR-elect beginning July 1, shadowing Davidson for one year before assuming sole responsibility July 1, 2027, for a four-year term.
Haab is currently the director of the School of Environment and Natural Resources in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
Beyond his significant contributions to Ohio State's academic mission, Haab has represented the university in several external and advisory roles - including as a member of the EPA Science Advisory Board, Environmental Economics Advisory Committee, and as president of the National Association of Agricultural Economics Administrators.
Davidson, professor of Germanic languages and literatures, has served as FAR since 2015. He is stepping down after the maximum three terms of service. He will mentor Haab over the next year to ensure an efficient and effective transition.
