Irvine Receives Designation as a Clean California Community

The City of Irvine has been designated as one of the first 32 Clean California Communities in the state - and one of only four in Orange County - highlighting an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and dedication to keeping Irvine a vibrant and beautiful place to live.

The Clean California Community Designation Program is part of the broader Clean California Initiative, which was established in 2021 to clean up, reclaim, transform, and beautify public spaces statewide. The program was developed in partnership with Caltrans, Keep America Beautiful, and Keep California Beautiful.

To earn the designation, Irvine had to meet a series of criteria in support of litter prevention, beautification, and environmental enhancement. The City conducted education and outreach aimed at reducing single-use plastics and implemented the gas-powered lawn equipment rebate initiative, which provides financial incentives for residents to purchase battery-operated lawn equipment after safely dismantling and recycling gas-powered equipment.

"The Clean California Community designation is a testament to our dedication to reducing litter, enhancing public spaces, and inspiring pride in our community," said Mayor Larry Agran. "This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our community, and it reaffirms our shared dedication to keeping Irvine a beautiful, sustainable, and welcoming place for all."

Irvine has long been a leader in California's Zero Litter movement and continues to move forward with innovative sustainability efforts, from advancing alternative methods of transportation to providing resources that help residents switch to solar and reduce their carbon footprint. The City has drafted a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which builds on previous steps toward climate leadership in Orange County and charts a path toward a truly climate-smart future. Community input on the CAAP is being accepted through October 3.

In recognition of this distinction, Irvine will receive Clean California Community signage, educational resources, and automatic membership with Keep California Beautiful.
