GUEST EDITORIAL: Rep. Anissa Jones on Georgia’s Economic Outlook: Middle Georgia Families Still Feeling the Strain

By State Representative Anissa Jones (D-Macon)

(220 words)

Georgia State Economist Robert Buschman's presentation outlined a mixed economic forecast for Georgia. While lower personal debt levels and stronger bank balance sheets are positive indicators, slow job and income growth, persistent inflation, high mortgage rates and record business bankruptcies continue to challenge families and small businesses across the state. Consumer and business confidence remain low, with many expressing concerns about rising prices and slowing growth.

Economic stability doesn't mean much if working families can't keep up with the cost of living. Incomes are not keeping pace with inflation, and that reality is being felt deeply across Middle Georgia. Families and small businesses in Macon-Bibb County, Warner Robins and Centerville are still facing higher housing costs and rising utility bills.

Middle Georgia is powered by working families, military households and small businesses. When prices rise faster than paychecks, it affects every part of our local economy-from homeownership to childcare to keeping our small businesses open.

This is why I am reaffirming my legislative priorities to address these challenges, including increasing wages and workforce development, expanding affordable housing and utility relief, improving access to affordable healthcare and childcare and strengthening support for small businesses.

Economic growth must reach kitchen tables, not just balance sheets. My commitment is to ensure Middle Georgia families aren't left behind as our state moves forward.

Representative Anissa Jones represents the citizens of District 143, which includes portions of Bibb and Houston counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Economic Development & Tourism, Interstate Cooperation and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
