Rep. Matt Reeves Applauds Final Passage of Bill to Update District Attorney Pay

ATLANTA - State Representative Matt Reeves (R-Duluth) applauds the Georgia General Assembly's recent final passage of House Bill 1020, legislation sponsored by Rep. Reeves, which would revise district attorney compensation and update the Judicial Retirement System (JRS).

"Georgia's district attorneys fight felony crime across Georgia, and this bill would support public safety so that Georgians can feel safe in our homes, at work, at school and in our communities," said Rep. Reeves. "HB 1020 mirrors 2025 legislation governing Superior Court Judges' pay, and it is important to note that this bill would be the first statutory pay increase for Georgia district attorneys since 2015-emphasizing just how vital this pay increase would be."

If signed into law, HB 1020 would revise district attorney compensation to allow the General Assembly to set the annual salary of each district attorney, with the salary not exceeding 88 percent of the annual salary fixed for judges of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. District attorneys would have the ability to opt into the new structure by January 1, 2030. Additionally, the bill would amend the Judicial Retirement System to require district attorneys hired after June 30, 2026, to reach the age of 65, rather than 60, in order to receive full retirement benefits.

"I am grateful to Senator Bo Hatchett for sponsoring this piece of legislation in the Senate, and I applaud the extensive work done on HB 1020 by House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Chairman Rob Leverett," added Rep. Reeves. "I am hopeful for this piece of legislation to be signed into law and for the positive impact HB 1020 will have on our state."

Rep. Matt Reeves represents residents of Suwanee, Sugar Hill and Duluth and serves as vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and chairman of the House Blue Ribbon Insurance Rate Study Committee.
