The City of Southfield proudly recognizes A Century of Black History Month: Honoring the Past. Shaping the Future., a nationally significant milestone marking 100 years of celebrating the history, culture, resilience, and contributions of African Americans. As a diverse and welcoming community, Southfield values the cultural richness of its residents and the shared histories that continue to shape the city today.
Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of African Americans whose impact has shaped our nation and local communities, while also considering how that history informs the future. Throughout February, the City will observe this centennial year with a full calendar of programs and experiences for residents of all ages.
This year's events include interactive youth activities, literary discussions, poetry workshops, live music, historical presentations, cultural performances, and community gatherings. Together, these offerings honor Black excellence across the arts, history, food, and storytelling while fostering learning, reflection, and meaningful community connection.
In recognizing this centennial year, the City of Southfield reaffirms its commitment to honoring the past while shaping a future rooted in understanding, inclusion, and shared community values.
