The Clearwater Public Library System's Seed Library program has taken root - and it's flourishing. Since its launch at the Countryside Library in January 2023, and its expansion into the East Community Library @ St. Petersburg College (SPC) the following year, the program has collectively circulated nearly 20,000 seed packets to local residents.
This unique initiative invites patrons to "check out" free seed packets to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers at home. These seeds support sustainable living and help connect Clearwater residents with the natural world.
The program operates like a traditional library - but instead of books, patrons borrow seed packets. The collection includes a variety of herbs, vegetables, flowers, and pollinator-friendly plants suited to Clearwater's climate.
Seeds can be checked out at the Seed Libraries located at both the Countryside Library and East Community Library. The program is open to all community members, regardless of gardening experience.
The program's popularity reflects a growing community interest in sustainability, food independence, and local ecology. With a wide range of seed types - from culinary herbs to pollinator-friendly flowers - residents are finding joy and purpose in their gardens.
At the Countryside Library, the community's top choices show a love for edible gardening:
At the East Community Library, the top seeds reflect a strong interest in flowers and herbs, alongside food crops:
These trends highlight Clearwater's enthusiasm for diverse gardening goals - from home cooking and pollinator support to beautifying outdoor spaces.
The Seed Library is designed to be accessible for gardeners of all skill levels. Patrons can visit either location, browse the seed collection, and choose what they'd like to grow - no special equipment or prior knowledge required.
Many participants also benefit from additional library resources, including seasonal planting guides that enhance gardening success.
The Seed Library program reflects the Clearwater Public Library System's broader mission to educate, empower, and inspire. By promoting sustainability, the program helps residents make environmentally conscious choices - one seed at a time.
With thousands of seeds already planted, this initiative is not only growing gardens - it's growing a healthier, more resilient Clearwater.
Visit the Seed Libraries at the Countryside Library or the East Community Library @ SPC to check out seeds and begin your gardening journey. It's free, easy, and open to all.
