Each fall, the iconic Bascom Hill at the University of Wisconsin-Madison transforms into a vibrant sea of pink flamingos - a whimsical sight that signals the return of Fill the Hill, a Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) day-of-giving initiative. Now in its 13th year, this beloved tradition blends campus history, community spirit, and philanthropy to support UW-Madison's most pressing needs.
The roots of Fill the Hill trace back to 1979, when members of the satirical Pail and Shovel student government party planted 1,008 plastic flamingos on Bascom Hill as a prank. The spectacle became legendary, and in 2013, WFAA revived the flamingo motif to inspire giving. Flamingos placed on the hill during the 24-hour campaign represent gifts made to the UW - a visual celebration of generosity and a nod to the inspired goofiness of campus culture.
Over the years, Fill the Hill has raised more than $3.5 million through 21,000+ gifts. In 2024 alone, 3,334 generous donors gave $511,877. This year, for the first time, donors who give $100 will get a mini flamingo, and those contributing $350 or more will receive both a mini flamingo and a full-size flamingo. More than 100 campus areas take part, allowing alumni and friends to support the programs and causes closest to their hearts.
In today's environment, this funding is more critical than ever. UW-Madison is facing significant challenges in federal funding, which have led to a 5 percent budget cut this year. Though private support cannot fully cover federal funding, it helps bridge the gap and sustain excellence in education, research, and student life. Contributions from Fill the Hill directly affect academic initiatives, scholarships, research, and even student organizations.
Beyond dollars raised, Fill the Hill fosters a sense of unity and pride among Badgers worldwide. Whether snapping selfies with flamingos or sharing stories on social media tagging @WisAlumni, participants celebrate the enduring spirit of UW-Madison and its commitment to innovation, inclusion, and impact.
When the flamingos return each October, they remind us that even the most lighthearted traditions can make a profound difference. Fill the Hill is more than a fundraiser - it's a celebration of community, legacy, and the power of giving. Join us "Flocktober" 9-10!
