Storm impacts on municipal services | Sunday, Jan. 18, 9 p.m.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that winter operations crews are on standby and will begin clearing streets and sidewalks when snow begins to accumulate overnight.

Residents are reminded that the municipal overnight parking ban is being enforced (in both Zone 1 - Central and Zone 2 - Non-Central), to allow crews to properly clear streets and sidewalks, from 1 to 6 a.m. on Jan. 19. Visit halifax.ca/snow to find updates on snow clearing operations and service standard timelines.

The following are updates on municipal services:

Halifax Transit

Depending on conditions, Halifax Transit buses may be on snow routes or detours on Jan. 19. Service disruptions will be announced as needed via @hfxtransit.bsky.social on Bluesky and the website.

Solid Waste

Residents are asked not to put waste out at the curb this evening, Jan. 18, to give crews the space needed to clear snow overnight.

An update on the status of curbside waste collection will be provided by 6 a.m. on Jan. 19. For more information, visit the website.

Parks & Recreation

The Halifax Public Gardens will be closed on Jan. 19.

Due to the winter storm in the forecast overnight into Jan. 19, many municipal recreation facilities are delaying opening on Jan. 19. A decision will be made at 10 a.m. (with potential re-opening at noon) regarding whether rentals, facilities and programming activities will continue as scheduled.

For the most up-to-date information, follow @hfxrec.bsky.social on Bluesky or call your local recreation centre.

Emergency Management Coordination Centre

The municipality partially activated its Emergency Management Coordination Centre (EMCC) at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 18. The EMCC is staffed by employees from across the organization and provides a central place to coordinate emergency management efforts.

hfxALERT

Register for hfxALERT, the municipality's mass notification system to receive urgent and non-urgent (including overnight winter parking ban notifications) public alerts by phone, email or text.

Residents should continue to monitor local forecasts, follow guidance from emergency officials and stay informed through municipal channels, including halifax.ca and official social media accounts and RSS feeds.
