One hundred and four Nigerian students have secured fully funded postgraduate scholarships under the European Union's (EU) prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Plus programme for the 2025-2026 academic year. The scholarships offer awardees the opportunity to study interdisciplinary programmes across multiple countries while preparing for roles in academia, policymaking, and global development sectors.

Ambassador Gautier Mignot described the awardees as exceptional talents who emerged from a highly competitive global pool, noting that over 15,000 applications were received globally. "You should be proud of yourselves, and so are we," he said at a pre-departure event organised for the awardees.

Eight-three of the 104 Nigerian students (about 80 percent) were awarded fully funded scholarships covering tuition, travel, insurance, and living costs. Nigeria remains the top participating country in Africa for the Erasmus programme and ranks among the global top five alongside nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Mexico.

Since 2014, more than 800 Nigerians have benefitted from Erasmus scholarships, with over 600 of them awarded in the last four years alone. He described this upward trajectory as a strong indicator of the intellectual capacity and resilience of Nigerian youth, as well as a symbol of the EU's growing partnership with Nigeria in the education sector.
