The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) yesterday deployed its 11th Aviation Contingent to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), while the main group of the 10th SLAF Aviation Contingent returned home after completing a one-year deployment.
According to SLAF media sources, the 11th Contingent, which departed Sri Lanka on 21 January, consists of 22 officers, including two lady officers, and 88 airmen, including five airwomen. The Contingent is commanded by Group Captain Asiri Pathirage and will carry out aviation duties under the UN mandate.
Meanwhile, 94 personnel of the 10th SLAF Aviation Contingent arrived in the country early the same day following the completion of their one year long deployment, which commenced on December 6, 2024.
During its tour, the 10th Contingent conducted extensive air operations in support of peacekeeping and humanitarian tasks, logging over 1,500 flying hours. It also carried out several medical evacuation missions, including night operations, assisting UN personnel and civilians under challenging conditions.
The Contingent received commendation from the Force Commander of MINUSCA, with individual commendations awarded to senior pilots for their performance and leadership, the statement said. The mission also generated foreign income through aviation operations and UN reimbursements.
Senior SLAF officers, including Director General Planning Air Vice Marshal Deshapriya Silva, were present at Bandaranaike International Airport to receive the returning personnel and to see off the departing contingent, SLAF media further says.
