Join in campus-wide celebrations for National First Generation Day

The Student Connections and Support Center encourages all at Boise State to recognize and celebrate first generation college students the week of Nov. 3-7 in honor of National First Generation Day. These efforts are designed to raise visibility, foster belonging and honor the significant achievement of being the first in one's family to attend college.

Campus departments encouraged to participate

Departments are invited and encouraged to identify and highlight first generation employees and student staff members.

Suggested activities may include:

  • Visibility Displays: Decorate student-facing areas with celebratory displays, student art or messages related to National First Generation Day.
  • "Why I'm First" Photo Wall: Create a photo opportunity where first generation students, faculty and staff can share personal answers to what being a first-generation individual means to them, displaying the photos prominently in their space.
  • Storytelling Board: Set up a board with prompts such as, "I am first gen, and I am proud of…" or "My first gen journey is important because…" to gather and display student narratives.
  • Resource Walls: Share clear information about resources available to first generation students, both within the local office and across the wider campus.

The key goal for all participating offices is to create a visible, welcoming and empowering environment that highlights the strengths and achievements of this community.

Festival to anchor celebrations

The highlight of the week will be the First Generation Fall Festival, scheduled from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, in the Hatch Ballroom.

This event aims to demonstrate to students that they are part of a large, vibrant community and that their journey to higher education is a remarkable achievement worthy of celebration.
