CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 29, 2026) - Crescent Communities, a nationally recognized, market-leading real estate investor, developer, and operator of mixed-use communities, today announced the land closing for the future Berryhill Elementary School at The River District, a transformative 1,200-acre master-planned development in West Charlotte.
The new 40-acre campus, developed in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), will replace the existing Berryhill School facility and will serve students and families in West Charlotte for generations to come. The campus will initially open as Berryhill Elementary School at The River District, serving grades K-5, with plans for a future second phase that will expand the campus to include sixth through eighth grade.
The project will replace and expand aging school facilities and address long-term educational infrastructure needs across Mecklenburg County. CMS will oversee school development, operations, and programming.
Located within The River District along Sadler Road, the school site was intentionally selected to create strong connectivity - particularly pedestrian friendly access - for students and families living throughout the community.
"This is an incredibly meaningful milestone for The River District and for West Charlotte," said Rainer Ficken, Senior Managing Director of The River District. "A great community is built around the places where families live, gather, learn, and grow together. The addition of Berryhill Elementary School at The River District further establishes this as a fully realized, long-term community where residents can truly put down roots. The ability for children to safely walk or bike to school, and to learn in an environment surrounded by nature and outdoor experiences, is something that makes this project uniquely special."
The school's location within The River District will provide students with direct pedestrian access from surrounding neighborhoods and opportunities for immersive outdoor learning experiences connected to the development's extensive natural areas, trails, and open spaces. Students will be able to experience nature and outdoor education right outside their back door, and families will benefit from the kind of connectivity and accessibility that define thoughtful, future-focused community planning.
Most recently, The River District celebrated the grand opening of NOVEL River District, its first multifamily community containing 318 units. In addition to NOVEL River District, The River District will include around 2,350 multifamily residential units upon completion. In January, local developer Laurel Street closed on 87 mixed-income multifamily units, with delivery expected in early 2027.
Additional single-family homes and townhomes are now under construction and available for purchase. Crescent Communities also recently broke ground on River Point, its third distinct neighborhood containing 219 residential lots with homes built by Toll Brothers and DRB Homes.
