Customer-owned renewable generation interconnections increased about 9 percent in 2025, growing from 292,284 in 2024 to 319,068 statewide. Together, these systems represent nearly 3.15 million kilowatts (kW) of electric generation capacity, up approximately 12 percent from the previous year. Solar photovoltaic panels remain the most popular renewable choice.
The FPSC amended its interconnection and net metering rule in 2008 to establish requirements for eligible customer-owned renewable generation systems to connect to the electric grid, use the electricity they generate to help offset their electric usage, and receive credit for excess electricity they send back to the grid. Since the rule was amended, customer-owned renewable generation interconnections have grown from 577 in 2008 to more than 319,000 in 2025.
The rule requires Florida's investor-owned electric utilities to provide an expedited interconnection process for qualifying customer-owned renewable generation systems. State law also requires municipal electric utilities and rural electric cooperatives to provide standardized interconnection agreements and net metering programs for customer-owned renewable generation.
Individual utility reports and statewide summary data are available on the FPSC website. Customers interested in installing a renewable energy system or learning more about net metering should contact their local electric utility.
