Department of World Languages and ASL Club host Deaf film night

The Department of World Languages supported the American Sign Language Club in hosting a special Deaf film night on campus. Students had the unique opportunity to connect virtually with Minnesota-based Deaf filmmaker Charlie Ainsworth. They watched and discussed three short films based on real Deaf experiences: "Dinner Table Syndrome," "Glass Cage" and "The Deaf Do Not Beg."

Students shared perspectives that differed from the Deaf viewpoint when watching the films. They especially appreciated "Dinner Table Syndrome," which left a strong impact and encouraged them to think about how to create change. Many expressed hope to see more Deaf films from a Deaf perspective. Ainsworth and his team rely on donations to continue producing these films so that universities and high schools can use them as educational resources to explore a variety of topics based on Deaf culture.

Audience members asked questions, and Ainsworth shared the inspiration behind each story, sparking meaningful conversations and new perspectives on Deaf culture.

All donations from the event supported future Deaf film projects The Road South and Angry Deaf People.

The group also welcomed local guest speaker Sonny Cabbage, who shared his experiences from the historic 1988 Deaf President Now movement, as featured in the original documentary.

This event was a meaningful way to celebrate Deaf History Month and connect students with the rich history and culture of the Deaf community. The event drew approximately 30 students, faculty and community members, creating an engaging space for meaningful discussion and connection around Deaf culture.
