The First Lady of Lithuania: Investment in people is the most important condition for long-term wellbeing

The First Lady of Lithuania, Diana Nausėdienė, on Tuesday took part in the opening plenary session of the Global Power Women Forum 2026 at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, titled "Women, Power and the Architecture of Global Economies: Designing Systems That Deliver Growth, Stability and Resilience."

At the forum, dedicated to discussing the role of women in economic governance, trade, investment, and long-term national development, the First Lady delivered a speech entitled "Human Capital as Economic Infrastructure: Wellbeing, Education and the Foundations of Resilient Prosperity."

Diana Nausėdienė presented Lithuania's progress in building a modern, innovation-driven state and emphasized the importance of human capital for long-term economic growth and societal resilience.

"Lithuania's greatest and most exceptional asset has always been its people - their historically formed strong values and their-fast adaptable mindsets," the First Lady said.

She noted that technological change is fundamentally reshaping the development of nations and societies, making it especially important today to maintain the ability to make responsible decisions and rely on scientific knowledge.

"Human capital has always been, and remains, the most important capital on the planet, enabling all other forms of capital," she emphasized.

Speaking about the development of artificial intelligence and the rapidly changing technological landscape, the First Lady highlighted the need to preserve critical thinking, strengthen technological literacy, and enhance society's ability to adapt to change.

Presenting Lithuania's experience, Diana Nausėdienė reviewed the country's achievements in energy security, life sciences, laser technologies, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure. According to the First Lady, Lithuania's progress has been driven by openness to international cooperation, investment, science, and the ability to respond quickly to change.

She also noted that since 2010, Lithuania's gross domestic product has tripled. According to the First Lady, this growth has been driven by consistent investment in people, openness to international cooperation, and the ability to adapt to a changing environment.

"If I had to single out one key ingredient in our formula for success, it would be the speed of action," Diana Nausėdienė said.

The First Lady also emphasized that technological progress must go hand in hand with investment in education, health, and the nurturing of human capabilities.

"That is why nurturing human capital, education, skills, and health are essential not only for sustaining technological progress but also for ensuring that it does not erode our societies," Diana Nausėdienė said.

According to the First Lady, states today must not only foster innovation but also ensure that technological progress serves people, enhances societal wellbeing, and helps build a sustainable future.

The Global Power Women 2026 forum is taking place at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. This year's theme is "Women-Powered Economies: Capital, Trade, and the Future of Economic Governance." The forum brings together policymakers, business and civic leaders, investors, academics, and experts from international organizations to discuss economic governance, investment, trade, and long-term resilience of nations.
