Tyler Pounds Regional Airport partners with TJC to host immersive experience for individuals with autism

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Tyler Junior College Student Physical Therapist Assistant Organization is partnering with Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Envoy Airlines, our Regional Affiliate of American Airlines, to host Onboard for Adventure, an immersive airport experience for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families for the second year in a row.

The free event will take place on Sunday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. Designed to reduce the anxiety that often accompanies air travel, Onboard for Adventure offers families a safe, low-pressure opportunity to experience each stage of the airport journey, without boarding a plane.

Participants will be guided through the process of checking in, receiving boarding passes, and completing a simulated TSA security screening. From there, families will proceed to the gate area and walk down the jet bridge, mimicking the experience of boarding an aircraft before returning to the terminal.

The event is all about making air travel more accessible and less stressful for individuals with autism. By practicing each step in a controlled, supportive environment, participants can build familiarity and confidence before traveling.

The event will welcome up to 120 participants in two groups, with 20 volunteers supporting each session. Arrival times will be staggered to ensure a calm, spacious environment for all guests.

In addition to offering this simulated experience, the event also highlights the TSA Cares program, which provides extra assistance to passengers with disabilities and medical conditions.

Those interested in attending can register at https://tjc.jotform.com/250094487253056.

Families attending Onboard for Adventure will receive a custom social story to review in advance, helping participants prepare for the day. Volunteers in black shirts marked "Volunteer" will be stationed throughout the event to offer assistance and encouragement.

Parking will be available in the Long-Term Lot at no cost.
