City of Waverly Flood Monitoring

posted in Public Works on July 11, 2026

The City of Waverly is continuing to monitor river conditions. One key resource we use is the National Weather Service (NWS) Water Prediction Service. This website (https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/WVLI4) shows current river levels for Waverly and predictions for locations upstream (Charles City) and downstream (Janesville) from Waverly. The National Weather Service does not predict river levels for Waverly due to the inflatable dam.

Current River Forecasts • Charles City appears to be close to cresting around 17.7 feet this afternoon. • Janesville's forecasted crest was recently lowered from 13.0 feet to 12.1 feet Saturday at 7 PM.

These forecasts help us compare current conditions to past flood events.

Comparable Historical Flood Events

June 2014 • Charles City: 16.82' • Janesville: 12.52' • Waverly: 10.19'

June 2024 • Charles City: 21.57' • Janesville: 14.36' • Waverly: 11.93'

While no crest forecast is available for Waverly, current upstream forecasts generally fall between these two historical events. Forecasts can change as weather conditions evolve, and City staff will continue monitoring river levels throughout the event.

Potential Local Impacts • 7th Ave SE closes at approximately 11.0' • 4th St SE closes at approximately 11.5' • Water begins crossing Crestwood Drive and 8th St SE at approximately 11.6'.

Current Closures: Parts of Brookwood Park and Kiwanis Balls Diamonds

Please use caution near the river, obey all barricades, and never drive through flooded roadways. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
