Audiences will experience sub-bass vocalisms, sonic layering and drone-based electronic loops when "Now: The Magic of Vocal Improvisation" comes to Northwest Missouri State University.
Los Angeles-based artists David Harris, Fahad Siadat and Fabricio Cavero-Farfan will perform the program with Dr. Rachel Day, an assistant professor of music in Northwest's School of Fine and Performing Arts.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in the Charles Johnson Theater at the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building. The performance is free and open to the public.
Siadat, Harris and Cavero-Farfan specialize in overtone singing, group improvisation and subharmonic singing. They will be joined by Day as part of an engaging vocal improvisation performance at Northwest.
The performance emphasizes connection through emotionally and sonically linked vocalists while audience energy helps shape the performance in real time. It explores the creative possibilities of sound and encourages participants to engage deeply in the present moment.
"This is an opportunity to explore sound, to fully sense how physical sound is and its impact on the body," Day said. "Additionally, the playfulness and exploratory nature of the concert will be different from anything they have ever previously experienced. Think of it as experimental theatre for the vocally curious."
Funding support for the performance is provided by the Missouri Arts Council.
