Award rain over Schibsted’s Swedish media

It was an award-filled evening for Schibsted's Swedish media houses when two of the industry's biggest galas were decided in Stockholm on Thursday.

At Berns, the "Årets Dagstidning" awards - often referred to as the Swedish newspaper championships - were held, where the Swedish Media Publishers' Association annually honors the country's daily newspapers. At the same time, a few kilometers south at Medborgarplatsen, the photography industry's most prestigious prizes were presented in the "Årets Bild" competition.

The result: a series of awards for Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet and TV4.

Newspaper of the Year

At the "Årets Dagstidning" gala, Aftonbladet won the award for Best Photojournalism for the report Annika wanted to die by reporter Alexander Bönke and photographer Magnus Wennman.

"I want to thank Annika for the trust she gave us," said Alexander Bönke as he received the award.

In its motivation, the jury highlighted the editorial power of photojournalism:

"With integrity and quiet presence, one of our most ethically complex issues is portrayed through a woman's final life choice. The publication leaves a lasting impression."

Svenska Dagbladet won two awards during the evening at Berns. The documentary podcast "The Man with the Revolver" from the podcast series Blenda won Audio Journalism of the Year.

"Winning this award in such tough competition feels fantastic. Through the work on the documentary series, we have uncovered new information about the Palme assassination and contributed to writing contemporary history. This is truly a team effort from the entire newsroom," said SvD reporter Magnus Arvidson.

The jury particularly highlighted the storytelling strength of the series:

"Through unique voices, astonishing information and engaging dramaturgy, the story of Sweden's most high-profile murder and national trauma is deepened."

SvD also won Reader Revenue of the Year for its work on digital growth, where the number of digital subscribers increased from 103,000 to 135,000 in one year.

Picture of the Year

At the "Årets Bild" gala, Aftonbladet's photographers also made a strong impact, winning several categories:

  • Pontus Orre - Sports Photo of the Year

  • Magnus Wennman - Everyday Life Reportage of the Year (Domestic)

  • Magnus Wennman - Everyday Life Reportage of the Year (International)

  • Pavel Koubek - News Reportage of the Year (Domestic)

"It's incredibly fun that Aftonbladet's fantastic photographers and strong photojournalism are recognized and celebrated like this," says photo editor Mats Strand.

TV4 was also awarded during the evening. Photographer Daniel Zdolsek won the International TV category for a report from the West Bank, produced together with reporter Filip Jacobson.

At both events, Schibsted's media houses also received several additional nominations as well as second- and third-place finishes.
