On Friday 24 October 2025, researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) welcomed a delegation of Members of Parliament to the AI Experience Centre on the main campus in Etterbeek. This high-tech testing, demonstration and meeting hub gives companies, tech entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers and the wider public the opportunity to explore artificial intelligence (AI) and co-create innovative technological solutions. The visit was part of Science Meets Parliament, an initiative by the Young Academy that pairs twenty scientists with twenty politicians. The aim: to help both sides better understand each other's worlds and work together on responses to major social challenges.
AI is increasingly shaping nearly every aspect of our society. The VUB has a solid scientific foundation in this field: its Artificial Intelligence Lab is one of the oldest in Europe and has been pioneering AI research since 1983.
"Today, we wanted to share that expertise with the MPs," explains Jeroen Van Schependom, professor at VUB and member of the Young Academy. "Our researchers offered an introduction to AI, followed by a session on AI in healthcare and demonstrations of real-world applications in the Experience Centre. Our goal was simple: to bridge the gap between science and policy. AI can help us tackle the major challenges of tomorrow, but only if researchers and politicians sit around the same table."
The discussion continued over lunch with Rector Jan Danckaert. With this initiative, VUB once again confirms its role as an Urban Engaged University - one that actively seeks solutions to the social and urban issues shaping our future.
