Nepal-Cyprus Relations


Political
Nepal and the Republic of Cyprus established diplomatic relations on 18 August 1980. The relations between the two countries are grounded on mutual respect, trust and understanding. Embassy of Nepal in Tel Aviv is concurrently accredited to Cyprus and the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Nepal. Both Nepal and Cyprus have established their Honorary Consulates in each other's capital.

High-level visits
Exchange of visits at various level has helped in fostering friendly relations between Nepal and Cyprus. King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya paid an official visit to Cyprus in 1982. Minister for Home Affairs K. P. Sharma Oli visited Cyprus in 2003.

Economic Cooperation
To date, economic exchanges between the two countries have been limited, apart from the presence of a sizeable Nepali diaspora in Cyprus.

Trade
Nepal exports articles of silver jewellery and precious metals, wood articles, paper and paperboard, readymade garments to Cyprus whereas the pharmaceutical products have been the main import-items from Cyprus. The balance of trade remains in favour of Cyprus. The table below shows the recent trade volume between the two countries.

Tourism/People-to-people relations
A few hundred of Cypriot tourists visit Nepal annually. Around 17,000 Nepalis currently reside in Cyprus, with the majority employed in the hospitality and construction sectors. Moreover, Cyprus has recently emerged as a popular destination for Nepali students pursuing for higher education.
