NEW YORK, NY - New York City Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos today celebrated the official opening of the Bronx Steam Center, which began programming for its first cohort of students this September. The Bronx STEAM Center is the city's first STEAM Center to offer healthcare-focused pathways, building on unprecedented levels of city investment in career-connected learning and New York City Public Schools' century-long legacy of Career and Technical Education (CTE). The STEAM model is an innovative hub for high school career-connected learning; a cohort of students from selected partner high schools spend at least half of their day in 11th and 12th grade in a work-immersive environment after choosing one of the specific pathways housed within the STEAM Center. In partnership with Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx STEAM has initially launched with offerings in healthcare and technology such as Certified Nursing Assistant, Cybersecurity, and Medical Assisting.

"We are excited to officially celebrate the launch of programming at the Bronx STEAM Center today," said Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. "The Bronx STEAM Center is an important and innovative model for career-connected learning. Having a dedicated space for student-centered, hands-on experiences will open countless doors to college and career opportunities and lifelong success."

Bronx STEAM will provide hands-on, industry-aligned training for students from ten Bronx high schools in fields like cybersecurity, nurse assisting, and medical assisting - an initiative designed to strengthen academic readiness while connecting learning to meaningful, family-sustaining careers. The Bronx STEAM Center prepares students for in-demand fields like healthcare and technology-sectors that not only power New York's economy but also offer the living-wage jobs essential to keeping the city affordable for working families.

The center is one of over 258 Career Connected Learning schools across New York City Public Schools, with 72 career connected learning programs in the Bronx. While the permanent space is still being designed, this temporary site at Mercy University has served as a vital location for 100 students participating in their career pathways through STEAM.

The Bronx STEAM Center was among seven total schools that opened across the city for the 2025-2026 school year, bringing world class education, accelerated programming, and career readiness to over 500 students and signifying the commitment to providing access to students in their neighborhoods. With more than 1,600 schools serving diverse communities across the five boroughs, New York City Public Schools remains dedicated to reflecting these communities while upholding excellence and preparing students for success in college, career, and life, including by opening of two new FutureReadyNYC schools, bringing a reimagined high school experience to students so they can plan for a bright future with good careers.
