The San Rafael Fire Department recently reached a major milestone by fully transitioning its entire Type 1 engine fleet to new attack lines and smooth bore nozzles. Years in the making, this upgrade reflects the department's ongoing commitment to modern firefighting standards and operational excellence.
The department now utilizes low-pressure hose manufactured by Key Hose paired with Elkhart Brass XD smooth bore nozzles, replacing the previous standard of constant-flow adjustable fog nozzles. The upgrade applies to both the 1¾-inch and 2.5-inch attack lines and provides firefighters with increased safety, enhanced operational performance, and reduced maintenance demands.
Completing this transition required extensive coordination and teamwork among command staff and line personnel across all three shifts. The department-wide effort resulted in the successful conversion of nine frontline and reserve engines, including the loading of more than 12,600 feet of new hose.
The San Rafael Fire Department remains committed to being a progressive, modern fire department focused on providing the highest level of service to the community. Maintaining reliable, up-to-date equipment is a critical part of that mission.
