Klobuchar, Smith Secure Federal Funding for Grand Marais in Senate-Passed Legislation

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that Congress approved $1,000,000 in funding to improve the Grand Marais Wastewater Treatment Facility. The current facility sits on the shores of Lake Superior and needs the funds to modernize, improve odor control, replace deteriorating infrastructure, and prevent discharge into the lake. The legislation now goes to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"Grand Marais's current wastewater treatment facility can't meet the needs of those who call the city home and the more than a million visitors the city hosts annually," said Klobuchar. "This federal funding will help Grand Marais make improvements to this critical public service and protect Lake Superior."

"In the land of 10,000 lakes, we take water seriously, and that includes wastewater," said Smith. "Upgrading wastewater treatment in Grand Marais is a win for the folks living there, tourists visiting this beautiful region, and the health of Lake Superior."

Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called "Congressionally Directed Spending" (CDS). During the CDS process, Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across Minnesota. That process includes a careful vetting to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure projects are cost-effective, reliable, and well-planned.

Projects are expected to receive funding over the next several months.
